Moon

It lights the way for the night traveler,
soft glow from the heavens;
variable orb illuminated
from sliver to full presence.

Umbrella for lovers
who would commit beneath it
their hearts entwined as one
at least until the dawn.

Silhouetted owl, bat
or cloud which passes by
in silent respect for the time,
often framed by the glow
which shares the dark with stars
and who keep us from
a total black oblivion.

Reflective sphere
hold steady thy position
lest a poet loses center
and the lunatics prevail.

You packed into such a teeny space so many images and so many allusions to the myriad meanings of the moon. Great poem! R
Yea for the poets and eek for the lunatics. I loved this moon poem. Thanks.
myriad meanings of the moon" = this danced in my head!

And it follows small children everywhere they go.
