A while back, I wrote about my unintended vacation and things that have slowed down the process of finding a new job. Last week I had an opportunity fall into my lap, and things worked out surprisingly fast.
I occasionally do Critical Mass bike rides and have been on the email list for years. I saw an email about a possible job and opened it out of curiousity. It was posted by a lawyer who specializes in representing injured cyclists and is getting so much business that he needs to add a support staff position: legal assistant. When I read the description, I thought: "yeah, I can do that."
I sent him a response with a resume. A little while later, he called me. It was a positive conversation and he asked me to come in for an interview that afternoon. I spent an hour talking with him and his paralegal, and left feeling that it went very well. The next day he called and offered me the job. I'm starting tomorow.
It feels great to be a beneficiary of job creation and to be doing work with a big picture goal I can feel really good about - helping fellow cyclists to get the settlements they need to help them get on with their lives after accidents.
This vacation ends just short of 3 years after it started. It will feel weird to be keeping a regular schedule again. During this time off, I've spent more time volunteering, working on my own projects and keeping a very irregular schedule. I've had a lot of good times, and been able to accomplish a lot of positive things during that time. Now it's time for something new.

The days went by fairly quickly. The commutes were reasonable. Yesterday I treated myself to a new cell phone to replace the old dying one and celebrate the new job.
Stim - Now that I'm downtown again we should have lunch soon.
