Bio
Beverly Akerman's short story collection, The Meaning of Children was released in Canada in 2011 (look for it at Amazon.ca, Chapters.ca, and http://tinyurl.com/6zd2ecp). After over two decades in molecular genetics research, Beverly realized she'd been learning more and more about less and less. Skittish at the prospect of knowing everything about nothing, she turned, for solace, to writing, winning myriad awards for her efforts. She recently received her third Pushcart nomination. Her nonfiction and academic work have appeared in Maclean’s Magazine, The Toronto Star, The National Post, The Montreal Gazette and on CBC Radio One (Canada’s NPR-equivalent), as well as in numerous lay publications and learned journals. It pleases her strangely to believe she’s the only Canadian fiction writer ever to have sequenced her own DNA. http://beverlyakermanmscwriter.blogspot.com/

To delegitimize Canada's long gun registry, a concerted disinformation campaign has been mounted by those ideologically opposed to it.

Myth 1: gun death is an urban, gang-related problem. The Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians points out nearly 75 per cent of gun deaths are suicides. HereRead full post »

At first glance, internet behemoth Google, Esquire magazine, and Cisco Systems don’t have a lot in common – different lines of business, dissimilar in size, and varying widely in global reach. But it turns out the world’s largest search engine, the men’s magazine and the netwo… Read full post »

To paraphrase one of my recent posts, “another day, another senseless gun death…” Or at least, another day, another story of moron-related gun mishap, this time of an eight-year-old boy who killed himself with a machine gun while at a Westfield, Massachusetts firearms exhibition. The interesting thing about staring down a gun barrel is how small the hole is where the bullet comes out, yet what a big difference it would make in your social schedule.

It's not just the economy, stupid!

(I've been writing favourably about gun control in Canada since my son was caught up in the mass shooting at Montreal's Dawson College in September 2006. Recently, some in the anti-gun-control lobby suggested I am the Gun Control Yenta. I think I like the sound of that...)

Sarah Palin, Some Kinda Woman

I really have to hand it to Sarah Palin, John McCain's recently selected
running mate. Most of the women I know who had just given birth to a Down's Syndrome baby and discovered that their seventeen-year-old daughter is pregnant wouldn't have time to even consider running for… Read full post »
