had had yer fortitude. i salute your amazing courage in
staying around for so long.
me, half yer age.
ready to pack it in. no. not yet.
Speaking of Joy:When I prepared this post I tried to get it out as fast as I could before anyone on the American continent would get up.This is why I took the European first, and I thought this would be OK as Jan lives in Finland.
Later on,I wanted to add the other one to the top,but I was afraid to mess up the blog post, this is why it's among the comments.
Which one have you listened to?
I was 14 years old when I learned this song at school and I loved it ever since.
I don't speak, read or understand most German or any of the Scandinavian languages (although I must profess a weakness for Swedish films, which I have taken to watching compulsively on Netflex). I gather the version of Beethoven's Ninth that you pointed me to is a joke? A lot "fuchen" this and that. No worries. It's the music that moves me. I've never even read the translation of the lyrics sung by the choir. I have just always loved the Ninth. It's one of the greatest songs ever written. :)
wir betreten feuertrunken,Himmlische,dein Heiligtum.
Deine Namen wenden wieder was die Mode streng geteilt,
alle Menschen werden Brüder,wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Seid umschlungen Millionen, diesen Kuß der ganzen welt.
Brüder,über'm Sternenzelt muß ein edler Vater wohnen.
1. Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium!
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, Dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
was die Mode streng geteilt,
alle Menschen werden Brüder,
wo Dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muss ein lieber Vater wohnen,
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muss ein lieber Vater wohnen!
2. Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Was den großen Ring bewohnet,
huldige der Sympathie.
|: Zu den Sternen leitet sie,
wo der Unbekannte thronet. :|
3. Freude heißt die starke Feder
in der ewigen Natur;
Freude, Freude treibt die Räder,
in der großen Weltenuhr.
Blumen lockt sie aus den Keimen,
Sonnen aus dem Firmament,
Sphären rollt sie in den Räumen,
die des Sehers Rohr nicht kennt.
Froh wie seine Sonnen fliegen
durch des Himmels prächtigen Plan,
laufet Brüder, eure Bahn,
freudig wie ein Held zum Siegen!
4. Freude sprudelt in Pokalen;
in der Traube goldnem Blut
trinken Sanftmut Kannibalen,
die Verzweiflung Heldenmut. -
Brüder, fliegt von euren Sitzen,
wenn der volle Römer kreist;
lasst den Schaum zum Himmel spritzen:
dieses Glas dem guten Geist!
Den der Sterne Wirbel loben,
den des Seraphs Hymne preist,
dieses Glas dem guten Geist
überm Sternenzelt dort oben!
5. Festen Mut in schweren Leiden,
Hilfe, wo die Unschuld weint,
Ewigkeit geschwornen Eiden,
Wahrheit gegen Freund und Feind,
Männerstolz vor Königsthronen -
Brüder, gält's Gut und Blut:
dem Verdienste seine Kronen,
Untergang der Lügenbrut!
Schließt den heil'gen Zirkel dichter!
Schwört bei diesem goldnem Wein,
dem Gelübde treu zu sein,
schwört es bei dem Sternenrichter!
Text: Friedrich Schiller
Melodie: Aus Beethovens Neunte
I will try to get a good translation but if I don' find one,I will have to translate it for you and anyone interested in it.
