This blog is about the journey from here to there. Early posts have devotional poetry and prose with scripture included. Many deal with the difficulty of having people in my life who are living with cancer and have died from cancer. Now I'm focusing on going back to college in my 50's and discovering a new path to direct my art--which is art therapy. _________________________________________ All of the artwork I created unless otherwise noted. Righteous Determination: Wrestling with an Angel

Psalm 37
Righteous Determination: Wrestling with an Angel

Rebekah had twins Esau and Jacob.
It was predestined they would struggle.
God deemed that the Older, Esau
would serve the younger, Jacob.
It was Esau's birthright by tradition,
to inherit all, but, Jacob was determined
to receive the blessings promised by God.
Jacob conspired with his mother
to disguise himself as Esau
to his blind, elderly father,
claiming Esau's birthright and blessing.1
Esau came in minutes later furious he lost his inheritance.

Jacob had a dream
of a ladder ascending from earth to heaven,
where Angels of God were coming and going.
He heard the voice of God who
blessed him with the sacred ground he lay on.
He placed a stone he rested his head
on as a monument.2

Esau finally caught up with Jacob
pursuing him with 400 men.
Jacob sent presents ahead to appease his brother.
He was determined to stop the
struggle between the two of them.
Wrestling with an angel
to the point of dislocating his hip socket
Jacob said,
"I will not let you go until you bless me!"
He was blessed with the name Israel
and made amends with his brother.3

Uzziah who was crowned king at 16
was quite the entrepreneur
and became very successful.
He grew proud of his accomplishments
to the point of taking over the priest's position.
The priest who were consecrated by God
knew their placement.
Uzziah stepped beyond his and was struck with leprosy.4

The Apostles were healing
and converting people in great numbers.
They were held in such high esteem,
people were laying the sick in the streets,
so that Peter's shadow might fall on them as he passed by.5

Jesus said to Peter,
"On this rock I shall build my church
and the gates of Hades shall not prevail
against it."6

Oh God, during this Lenten season
you remind us from dust we came
and from dust we shall return.7

How do we know the blessings
you have stored for us in your treasury?
Where is our placement in Your Kingdom?
May I come closer to you in wisdom
so that I may know where I should be
and what you have for me.
If I must claim my inheritance with
the passion of Jacob,
let me do so!
Do not let me get arrogant and go beyond
my time and season!
Do not let me be complacent Oh Lord!
Bring us into your will
from place to place
from season to season.
May we climb the heavenly
ladder keeping the company of Angels!

1 Genesis 27:6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "I heard your father say to your brother Esau, 7 "Bring me game, and prepare for me savory food to eat, that I may bless you before the Lord before I die.' 8 Now therefore, my son, obey my word as I command you. 9 Go to the flock, and get me two choice kids, so that I may prepare from them savory food for your father, such as he likes; 10 and you shall take it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies." 11 But Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, "Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a man of smooth skin. 12 Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him, and bring a curse on myself and not a blessing." 13 His mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my word, and go, get them for me." 14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother; and his mother prepared savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the best garments of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob; 16 and she put the skins of the kids on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she handed the savory food, and the bread that she had prepared, to her son Jacob. 18 So he went in to his father, and said, "My father"; and he said, "Here I am; who are you, my son?" 19 Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, so that you may bless me." 20 But Isaac said to his son, "How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?" He answered, "Because the Lord your God granted me success." 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not." 22 So Jacob went up to his father Isaac, who felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him. 24 He said, "Are you really my son Esau?" He answered, "I am." 25 Then he said, "Bring it to me, that I may eat of my son's game and bless you." So he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come near and kiss me, my son." 27 So he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed. 28 May God give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. 29 Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you!"

2 Genesis 28:11 He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And the Lord stood beside him and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14 and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. 15 Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." 16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!" 17 And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.

3 Genesis 32:18 then you shall say, "They belong to your servant Jacob; they are a present sent to my lord Esau; and moreover he is behind us.' " 19 He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, "You shall say the same thing to Esau when you meet him, 20 and you shall say, "Moreover your servant Jacob is behind us.' " For he thought, "I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me." 21 So the present passed on ahead of him; and he himself spent that night in the camp. 22 The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. 24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." 27 So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28 Then the man said, "You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed."

42 Chronicles 26:16 But when he had become strong he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was false to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to make offering on the altar of incense. 17 But the priest Azariah went in after him, with eighty priests of the Lord who were men of valor; 18 they withstood King Uzziah, and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to make offering to the Lord, but for the priests the descendants of Aaron, who are consecrated to make offering. Go out of the sanctuary; for you have done wrong, and it will bring you no honor from the Lord God." 19 Then Uzziah was angry. Now he had a censer in his hand to make offering, and when he became angry with the priests a leprous disease broke out on his forehead, in the presence of the priests in the house of the Lord, by the altar of incense. 20 When the chief priest Azariah, and all the priests, looked at him, he was leprous in his forehead. They hurried him out, and he himself hurried to get out, because the Lord had struck him. 21 King Uzziah was leprous to the day of his death

5 Acts 5:12 Now many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. 13 None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high esteem. 14 Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women, 15 so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mats, in order that Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he came by. 16 A great number of people would also gather from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all cured. 17 Then the high priest took action; he and all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), being filled with jealousy, 18 arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors, brought them out, and said, 20 "Go, stand in the temple and tell the people the whole message about this life." 21 When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and went on with their teaching.

6 Matthew 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

7 Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn us back to dust, and say, "Turn back, you mortals." 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; 6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers

This was a hard read but got through it, some days I can't wait to be in the company of angels. I also want to make this a Lenten season, where I give up more to see God more and hear His voice more clearly in my life.
Greatfullheart- thank you for trying --it is a difficult one and it was a difficult one for me to pull together. I struggled with it just like the title itself. I didn't want to do it, I was tired , I AM tired , because this takes a lot of concentration. It may not to someone who knows the bible inside and out. But I don't. It's just as much of a learning experience for me as anyone else. Some days these psalms just flow other days it's a really hard to bring it together. But I'm really trying to keep my commitment and also my lenten fast is giving up time to God. It wouldn't be a sacrifice if we didn't have to stretch.
Jali, Yes, that's for sure, that's why we need to be sure we're in the right place with God! I wish you girls had your photo up or send me one so I know who I'm talking to.
Anne--always good to be with your work! I think for me, too, this is one of the harder stories in the Bible, isn't it? You are finding your voice, a beautiful one, throughout, though--so your work is a success!

Give yourself rest, my dear friend, and be rested. Take your fill of sweet energy, since you're giving so much to us!

With Love, Julie
Julishanti -you're always so positive, thank=you! I wish I could rest, but I can't miss any work right now and I'm a single mother with no family here. I'll catch up don't worry! Blessings!
