Psalm 6

When You first inhaled
and spoke the Word of creation,*
did you shout?
Did you groan? Did you sing?
When you breathed your Spirit**
to give us life,
was each breath a different color?
From the beginning,
You loved us.
Did you write in your book
that this one will dance,
that one will paint,
and this one will heal the sick?
How innumerable are your ways oh Lord,
How grand is your design.
For You,
one day here
could be a thousand years there.***
When did you paint the winged ones?
How did you decide which would
stand on four legs, which on two?
What of stripes and spots and shades
of flesh and fur?
How You have loved us.
Did you select from your laboratory
the scent of a peony,
or the curve of an orchid?
When a snowflake falls and
lands on the tip of a child's tongue,
do you weep with joy?
When we lash out in anger
killing one another do you
moan in anguish?
Still, You love us.
As a parent watching his children
are you at once proud,
at once ashamed?
From the mountaintops, to the seaside
to the darkest valleys;
You are there.
When a lion captures it's prey,
when a baby utters it's first
coo, You are there.
If we saw you face to face
could we look you in the eye?
Have we taken care of this
wonderful world you have
given us?
Have we blessed that which
You have blessed us with?
And yet you love us still.
Still, you love us.
Though we stumble ask for help
and stumble again,
You pick us up and say,
"Your sins are forgiven."****
And you love us still.

**Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.
***2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.
****Matthew 9:2 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you."
